Some Questions & Answers about Cell Popping

What is cell popping?
Cell popping is a form of body modification/body art/scarification that involves creating a temporary, tattoo-like body scar. It is practiced by Connie, The Artistic Domme.

How does it work?
A very hot probe is touched to the surface of the skin at one individual pore to create a small burn. This process is repeated as many times as necessary to create a pattern.

Does it hurt?
Yeah, you're burning your skin, and your skin (hopefully) has nerve endings in it that will register pain when burned. How much it hurts, and how well you can take it will depend on your own personal ability to process pain. I've done whole lower backs where the woman getting it barely winced and I've done a small triskelion where the recipient "screamed like a girl" for the first few pokes. It's going to vary from person to person.

How long has this been going on?
Body modification is as old as the human body, and scarification with fire is thousands of years old as well. (Search Google Images for "scarification tattoo" if you've got the stomach for it, but don't say I didn't warn you!) However, the idea of creating a design with individual pinpoint burns is fairly new, and The Artistic Domme is the champion of this new art form of cell popping body art.

How long does a cell popping body art design last?
It varies depending on the healing properties of the recipient's skin. Anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, or even more.

Can it be repeated?
Yes. I've gone over previous designs to "repop" them and that helps them to last longer. Over time the scars might even become permanent, depending on how your skin heals.

Can it be done over tattoos or integrated into them, or done with ink?
Based on some discussions I have had with tattoo artists and other experts, the consensus is that it isn't a good idea to mix the cell popping with any ink body art. The scarring of the cell popping will probably fade the tattoo. Also, if the burn were to get infected with ink residue, that might cause problems. We will continue experiments and discussion on this and will provide updates as we learn more. For now, we do not recommend mixing cell poppings with tattoos or ink.

How big or small can a cell popping design be?
They can be as small as 1.5" across and as large as a full back design (roughly 12" across by 18" high). Your imagination (and available body canvas) is your only limit.

Can it be done anywhere on the body?
It can be done many places, although I prefer to do it on spots that will not be getting a lot of contact or irritation so that the design can heal smoothly. The back, shoulders and legs are excellent spots; the buttocks less so. The inner thigh is delicate (i.e. could sting a bit more) but is a nice, smooth spot.

Does it have to be done by The Artistic Domme, or can I do it myself?
That's the whole idea behind the Artistic Domme Cell Popping Kit. It was designed to be supplemented with the Instructional CD to help you be able to do it at home on your own.
